Inline Hockey Loses a True Champion

September 7, 2011 was a sad day in the hockey world.  The KHL’s Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team were lost forever.  Czech Republic Inline gold medal captain Karel Rachunek was part of this tragedy and will be greatly missed by the inline hockey community.

Many people are aware of Karel’s ice hockey career with multiple seasons played in the NHL and KHL as well as appearances in the World Championships for his country.  His ice hockey experience and high profile brought instant credibility to inline hockey.  It was obvious that Karel was passionate about hockey and representing his country, the “C” on his jersey was further evidence of his pride.  His presence alone helped grow our game and his play was always an example to be followed.  It is hard to put this loss into words but Karel’s inline hockey legacy will be remembered forever.

Canada Inline would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends who lost loved ones on this day.

Canadian Men Finish 2011 Without a Medal

Team Canada wins their quarter final battle 3-0 against Team France with Martin Bradette between the pipes.  Bradette was ready for the challenge after watching his counterpart; Mark Servos stop the German team with an equally impressive 3-0 win in the previous game.  Only the host team stands between Canada and the gold medal final.

With less than a 10 minutes remaining in the semi finals verses Italy, Team Canada had their shutout streak of over 2.5 games snapped.  Italy had seized the momentum and made it a one goal game.  Canada fought hard but penalties proved costly and the game was tied 2-2 after regulation time.  The Canadian men started to gain confidence through the first overtime but could not find the back of the Italian net.  Less than 2 minute into the second overtime period Italy shattered dreams of gold for Canada.

The bronze medal final featured Canada and Team USA.  Both teams had golden intentions but needed to refocus to ensure a medal victory.  Team Canada could not overcome the disappointment of the game before and fell to USA 9-5.

Although the 4th place finish was not the prize the Canadian Men were hoping for, Canada Inline is very proud of our Men who fought hard for each other and their country until the final buzzer.  Thank you for representing Canada with class, respect and pride.

2011 Team Canada Men: Danny Larocque, Jason Allan, Jamie Visser, Jason Visser, Trevor Bennett, Olivier Chagnon, Mark Servos, John Clewlow, Andrew Rhodes, Lukas Ciotti, Thomas Woods, Frederick Corbeil, Martin Bradette, Phil Boudreault, Coach – Richard Ropchan, Athletic Therapist – Cary Grant.

Heartbreak for Canadian Women in the Gold Medal Final

After beating France 3-1 in the semi final, Team Canada Women faced a familiar foe in the gold medal game, Team USA.  With 00.01 seconds on the clock the puck found the back of the Canadian net to win the gold for USA at the 2011 Women’s World Inline Hockey Championships in Roccaraso, Italy.  This was a heartbreaking loss for the Canadian squad who had only medal in mind, gold.

Team Canada led the game 2-1 with 5 mins and 28 second left but could not hold on for the win.  Sasha Nanji of Team Canada opened up the scoring 9 minutes into the game giving Canada a 1-0 lead.  The USA responded only 1 min and 30 seconds later tying it at 1.  It didn’t take long for Nanji to score her second of the game at the 11 minute mark, putting Canada back on top 2-1.  The game remained close with chances to score for both teams, exciting the boisterous Italian fans.  Team USA scored to tie the game 2-2 with 5 mins and 27 seconds left in the game.  Canadian gold medal hopes were shattered with only 00.01 seconds on the clock as Team USA struck once again to win the game 3-2.

Canada Inline is very proud of our Women who fought hard for each other and their country until the final buzzer.  Their streak of medals continues at 9 with the 2011 silver medal.  Thank you for representing Canada with class and the winning tradition like only Canadian hockey players can.

2011 WIC Silver Medal Team: Keely Brown, Michelle Bonello, LaToya Clarke, Joanne Eustace, Lindsay Grigg, Jackie Jarrell, Brooke Ludolph, Montana Merante, Candice Moxley , Sasha Nanji, Amanda Parkins, Samantha Shirley, Christina Sorbara, Amanda Squire and Coach Donna Forbes.

Team Canada Men, through to the Quarter Finals

A convincing 3-0 win against Germany clinched second place in Pool B for the Canadian Men at the 2011 World Championships in Roccaraso Italy. Our Men`s team came to Italy looking to improve on the 6th place finish from a year ago.

The tournament started for Team Canada with a tough game verses the Czech Republic which finished in a 6-5 loss. However the CIRILH ruled the game a 1-1 tie because of player eligibility on both teams. After a second tie against a strong Swiss team 4-4 the Canadian Men needed a win to secure their place in the medal rounds.  Team Canada proved to be too much for the German squad as they controlled the puck for the majority of game 3.  The shutout win assured Team Canada the advantage for the seeding tiebreaker (total goals against) putting them in second place.

The quarter finals begin tomorrow with Canada playing Pool A 3rd place finisher Team France. Our boys will be ready to battle.  Go Canada Go!

Canadian Women Finish Tops in Pool B and Power Their Way to the Semi Finals

Team Canada continues to their quest for gold with 2 more wins at the World Championships in Italy. After taking care of business against Italy, Finland and Australia the USA was on deck in the final game of the pool stage. The rivalry continues with another hard fought battle between the 2 inline hockey powers. Timely goals and clutch goaltending was the difference for Canada winning 4-2 to clinch top spot in Pool B.

Great Britain came into the quarter final game to ready to prove they could play with the inline hockey powers. They scored the first 2 goals against Canada pushing the pace with hard work. Despite the slow start Team Canada proved to have too much talent and experience for the upstart squad. Canada filled the net to take the game 8-2.

Team France is the next hurdle on the road to gold.

CRQ 2011

Strong competition at the Coupe Roller Quebec in Sherbrooke was a great tune up for the Men’s National players in preparation for the FIRS World Inline Championships.  The Pro division in this year’s tournament included many talented players on 8 strong teams.  The Original 6 team proved to be the class of the division repeating as champions.

Canada Inline was represented by nine players that will participate in Italy at the WIC next month.  After four well played games the Garcons de Beauharnois found the net first in the semi-finals.  With a running time format in a two period game the goal proved to be too much for our men to overcome.  Overall CI was proud of our effort and was pleased to see the team bond on the trip.

Special thanks to the organizer of the CRQ, Danny O’Connor, along with all the volunteers and sponsors including SBK and Hockey Experts.  Canada Inline is looking forward to participating again next year.

Montana Merante had 3 assists, Michelle Bonello, Lindsay Grigg, Samantha Shirley, Sasha Nanji and LaToya Clarke had 1 assist each.  The keys to success were the smart play of Christina Sorbara and Joanne Eustace, along with strong playmaking ability from all 3 lines.  Keely Brown and Amanda Squire shared the win between the pipes for Team Canada.  The next opponent for our Women is Team Finland followed by Team Australia.

Canada Inline Pursues 2015 Pan Am Games

Canada Inline continues to pursue participation in the 2015 Pan Am Games to be held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The International Federation of Roller Sports (FIRS) has been recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing body of roller sports. The long standing relationship between Canada Inline and FIRS has given Canada Inline the opportunity to lead the proposal for participation as a non Olympic sport in the 2015 Pan Am Games.
Canada Inline has recently met with Pan Am Games organizers to begin building a case for having inline hockey as one of the nine non Olympic sports allowed as part of the games. Although Canada Inline feels that hockey would be a hometown crowd favourite, there is great competition for the limited available spots.

To show your support for inline hockey to be included at the 2015 Pan Am Games email us at info@canadainline.com or visit us on Facebook and press the Like button.
